What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value calculated from a person's height and weight. It is widely used as a screening tool to identify possible weight problems in adults. BMI is defined as body mass divided by the square of body height, and is expressed in units of kg/m².
BMI Formula
BMI (metric) = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)²
BMI (imperial) = 703 × weight(lbs) ÷ height(in)²
Frequently Asked Questions
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations. It doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat mass, so athletes may have a high BMI but low body fat. It also doesn't account for age, sex, or ethnicity differences in body composition.
What is a healthy BMI range?
According to the World Health Organization, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy for adults. Values below 18.5 are underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is classified as obese.
Does BMI apply to children?
For children and teens (ages 2–19), BMI is age- and sex-specific and is referred to as BMI-for-age. The same numeric BMI may mean different things depending on the child's age and sex.
