How the Paragraph Counter Works

Paragraphs are separated by one or more blank lines (double line breaks). Each paragraph is analyzed independently for word count, sentence count, and character count. This mirrors how most word processors β€” including Microsoft Word and Google Docs β€” define paragraph boundaries.

Ideal Paragraph Length for Readability

For web content, most style guides recommend 40–80 words per paragraph. Long paragraphs (150+ words) reduce readability on screen. Academic essays may use longer paragraphs to develop arguments thoroughly. Use the breakdown panel to quickly spot paragraphs that need splitting.

How are paragraphs detected?
Any block of text separated by one or more empty lines is counted as a separate paragraph.
What if my text has no blank lines?
The entire text will be counted as one paragraph. Add blank lines between sections to split them.
How many words should a paragraph have?
Web content: 40–80 words. Academic writing: 100–200 words. Novels: varies widely by style.
